Right now, the South Carolina legislature is considering a pair of important bills, S. 537 in the Senate, sponsored by Senator Larry Grooms, and its companion bill H. 4024, sponsored by Representative Anne Thayer, which would protect access to faith-based health care for more than 20,000 South Carolina members of Health Care Sharing Ministries (HCSMs).

Specifically these bills would clarify that ministries are not insurance for purposes of South Carolina law. They would exempt public university students who are also members of Health Care Sharing Ministries from their school’s insurance coverage requirement.

TAKE ACTION!

Please contact your SC Representative and Senator (find your legislators at the bottom of this page using the search tool, and then click here to contact them by email), and ask them to cosponsor S. 537 or H. 4024. (If you’re represented by one of the bill’s sponsors, be sure to thank them!)

Here are some points that you might want to make by phone or email:

  • The bill clarifies that HCSMs are not insurance, and therefore not subject to the insurance code or associated regulations. It is similar to the state code of 31 other states that have adopted safe harbors for HCSMs.
  • Preserves HCSMs as a viable choice for South Carolinians who are seeking a health care solution that is consistent with their religious beliefs
  • Clarifies for consumers that HCSMs are not insurance and helps distinguish HCSMs from other organizations in the marketplace.
  • Tell your own story with your HCSM (if you’re a member), or why you think it’s important for this health care option to be available to Christians in South Carolina
